MAYOR OF NEWBURY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO RAISE £10,000 FOR NEWBURY SPEAKABILITY
The Mayor of Newbury has launched a year long fundraising campaign in support of his chosen charity. Cllr Billy Drummond announced the launch of the ‘One in 100 Fundraising Campaign’ on Saturday 31st July as part of a charity coffee morning for Newbury Speakabilty.
The One in 100 Fundraising Campaign is inviting 100 people to take part in either fundraising, or making a one-off donation, of a minimum of £100 each. If successful, together this will raise at least £10,000 for Newbury Speakability.
The Mayor is inviting residents of all ages to take part; whether you prefer to make a one-off donation of £100 or want to take part in a personal fundraising activity or challenge. Examples of fundraising could be organising a bake sale, sponsored silence, running a marathon, sponsored head shave, selling crafts – all fundraising ideas are welcome, the only condition is £100 is raised for Newbury Speakability.
Speakability provides support to those with Aphasia from Newbury and surrounding areas to help build confidence, develop new skills, make new friends and practice their speaking.
Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech which is most commonly due to damage cause by strokes, or injury to the brain.
The charity is very close to the Mayor of Newbury’s heart. Cllr Billy Drummond said, “Speakability helped me both times in recovering from aphasia due to having two strokes, one in 2005 and the second in 2017. I want to use my year in office to highlight the charity and the support they provide to local people, raising as much money as possible for them this year.”
