By section 249(5) of the Local Government Act 1972 (amended by section 180 of the Local Government Planning and Land Act 1980, and updated by the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009) the Council wishes to recognise those who have given exceptional, dedicated service to the Parish.

The Mayor, apart from members of the Royal Family or the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire who represents them, takes precedence over all persons in the town. 

Information about Newbury's Twin Towns

Newbury Town Council introduced the Newbury Town Civic Award in 1998. More recently, the Young Persons Award, the Business Civic Award and the Environmental Contribution Award have been launched to run alongside the Civic Award.

The Mayor of Newbury's Charitable Trust is a charity run by each Mayor of Newbury during their term in office. Previously known as the Mayor's Benevolent Fund, its activities have been known to exist since the 1920s.
