Newtown Road Cemetery
Founded before 1850, it is believed that there are approximately 11,000 people buried in Newtown Road Cemetery. Unfortunately, the plot records along with some burial ledgers were lost in a fire. Only the location of those with headstones can be verified.
The Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery were set up in association with Newbury Town Council to help restore the cemetery to its former glory after it was closed in 2000 on health and safety grounds.
The Cemetery is now open every day from 10am to 3pm (except Christmas Day).
In the subsequent years, the Friends have undertaken many tasks including assisting with nature surveys and providing information and pictures for display boards and there are often open days.
For more information go to The Friends of Newtown Road website.
