TOWN COUNCIL PROUDLY COMMEMORATES VE DAY 80TH ANNIVERSARY WITH COMMUNITY EVENTS

Newbury Town Council, in collaboration with local partners, is proud to announce a series of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking this pivotal moment in history with a programme of activities that honour those who contributed to the end of the Second World War.

The events, taking place from May 8th to May 10th, will bring the community together to remember, reflect, and celebrate the legacy of those who served.

In the lead up, the town has been adorned in bunting thanks to the generous support of Visit Newbury, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Music and speeches will accompany the ceremony, with everyone invited to participate in this moment of national commemoration.

Saturday May 10th: Community Celebrations

Join us for a day of family-friendly fun from 11am to 3pm Victoria Park. The day will include activities from Kennet District Scouts and other local groups and charities, live music, singing groups and entertainment. The park will feature a variety of activities for people of all ages, come and have a go or sit back and enjoy the music.

The Royal British Legion will host events from 12pm throughout the afternoon and evening at their Pelican Lane venue, with historical displays, military vehicles, performances, and a special commemoration tribute band that will transport us back to 1945.

The Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Andy Moore said “VE Day marked the end of a long and challenging period in our nation's history; the sense of relief must have been immense.  80 years later it is important that we come together to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who secured our world for their successors. There’s something for everyone across these commemorative events, and I encourage all members of our community to join us in celebrating this milestone."
