MAYOR ATTENDS BOWLS CLUB CHARITY DAY FOR SPEAKABILITY

The West Berks Indoor Bowls Club held a charity day on Saturday 16th July in aid of Speakability, a stroke-survivors’ support group, and one of the Mayor of Newbury’s official charities for the year.

The Mayor is a member of the club and competed in the event himself after the official opening. Over 50 competitors took part in a triples competition which was followed by a buffet, a substantial raffle and a presentation to the winners.

The event was organised by the club officials David Stoneman, Terry Crook (Men's Captain),

Christine Smith (Ladies' Captain), Mike Blizzard (Vice President) and Jon Bennett (President).

Judy and Rod King from Speakability were present and were delighted with the money raised which is to be used for Speech Therapy for their members.

The Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Gary Norman, said, “It was great to take part in an enjoyable event for such a good cause. I am moved by the generosity of the bowls club members and their friends. Special thanks go to David, Terry and Christine for all their efforts in arranging the event. I would like to think they have set a precedent for other sports club to arrange charity events like this”.

West Berks Indoor Bowls Club intend to arrange a further event like this early next year for the benefit of another of the mayor’s charities and always welcomes everyone to their bowls taster sessions. Full details on their website https://www.wbibc.co.uk/
