TOWN COUNCIL OFFERS SUPPORT FOR LOCAL EFFORTS TO HELP UKRAINIAN REFUGEES

Newbury Town Council has extended its deepest sympathy to the plight of the people of Ukraine and pledged to help local efforts to support Ukrainian refugees.

The Policy and Resources Committee meeting on 25 April recognised that West Berkshire Council will lead the effort through the Ukraine Support Hub and Greenham Trust has set up a fund to support refugees.  In addition, The Twin Town Association is already bringing volunteers together and the Committee applauded those efforts and those of several other expert organisations also ready to help.  

Cllr Sarah Slack, Deputy Leader of the Council said, “We will do our best to help to facilitate these local initiatives.  The Ukrainian Flag has been flying proudly from our Town Hall since the beginning of March 2022, to show our solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the war and to all who are suffering during this very traumatic time”.

The Council wants to help where it can and agreed to offer the use of both The Chamber and Elsie Kimber Room at the Town Hall, Market Place, free of charge for relevant organisations to hold meetings.      

In addition, the Council will make its Grants open to application by relevant support groups and consider any other requests for support as they arise. The Council has written to the Support Hub and the Twin Town Association to offer this support.
