SHAW CEMETERY TREE POLLARDING

Newbury Town Council will be carrying out tree pollarding at Shaw Cemetery week commencing Monday 9 December.

This maintenance, which involves pruning the upper branches of trees to encourage healthy regrowth, is an essential part of our ongoing efforts to preserve the beauty and longevity of the Lime and Horse Chestnut trees at the Cemetery.

Pollarding is a tree management technique used to shape trees, control their size, and encourage the growth of new, healthy branches. By maintaining the trees in this way, we help improve the safety of visitors to the Cemetery and reduce the risk of damage during storms ensuring that the trees continue to thrive in their natural environment.

James Heasman, Parks & Open Spaces Supervisor at the Town Council said, “The tree works will encourage new growth and extends the lifespan of the trees. Our goal is to balance safety, sustainability, and the beauty of the trees at Shaw Cemetery.  The maintenance should take around a week to complete and the Cemetery will continue to be open to the public throughout although burials have been suspended during this time."

We value community feedback and want to ensure that this work benefits both the natural environment and the people who enjoy it.
