NEWBURY TOWN COUNCIL SADDENED BY THE NEWS OF THE DEATH OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II

 

The Mayor of Newbury, Councillor Gary Norman wishes to express the deep sadness of this Council, Officers and the residents of Newbury at the death of Queen Elizabeth and offer condolences to the Royal Family.

 

As a mark of respect, the Union Flag will be flown at half-mast from the Town Hall.

 

Her Majesty will be greatly missed

Saturday 17th September

The Books of Condolence will close at Newbury Town Hall at 4pm.

Monday 19th September

In order to pay our respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning, the Town Council will observe the Bank Holiday scheduled for Monday the 19th of September. As a result, the Town Hall offices will be closed on that day.

No events will be hosted on this day to allow residents to watch the funeral.

 

Tuesday 20th September

There will be a two-minute silence held outside the Town Hall, Market Place at 11.00am.

The Mayor of Newbury and representatives from West Berkshire Council will be the first to remove some of the floral tributes that have been left following the silence.

The remaining floral tributes will be removed later during the day. The flowers will be composted, and the compost will be used to plant a memorial tree within the next year.

Cards and personal messages which have been left in tribute will be archived for the Berkshire Archives.

The Books of Condolence will be open on Tuesday 20th September in the Town Hall reception area, at the Mansion House Street entrance, until 5pm.

Messages from the Books of Condolence will also be archived for the Berkshire Archives.

Preparations for a formal Memorial Service at St Nicolas Church are underway, with more details to follow. This will take place in the Autumn.

Along with the fixed physical locations, West Berkshire Council are operating a Book of Condolence in their Mobile Library which will be calling at the Wash Common Community Centre, Newbury, on Friday the 16th of September from 2:00-4:00pm
