NEWBURY CHRISTMAS FAYRE PLANNED FOR 3rd & 4th DECEMBER
Newbury Town Council is working with Newbury BID to hold this year’s Victorian Christmas Fayre on Saturday 3rd December and Sunday 4th December. This follows on from the success of last year’s event and promises to be even bigger and better.
On Monday 18 July the Town Council voted to allow the BID to use the Market Place on both days in order to facilitate the event. Cllr. Martin Colston proposed the motion, pointing out that this would be a test for future events in the Market Place.
“It’s clear that such events would be a benefit to Newbury as a whole and, in principle, the Town Council would like to support them. However, we of course need to support our Market traders who turn up 52 weeks every year come rain or shine. We would like to find a way to hold these events AND ensure that our Market traders and their customers also benefit, or, at the very least, do not lose out.
After the 2022 Christmas Fayre, the Charter Market traders, the BID members and the public will be surveyed to understand how the event went from their perspective and how we might all work together to make these events even better.
Among the recommendations to be put to the BID is the location for the Charter Market on 3rd December at the north end of Bartholomew Street so they will be as close as possible to the Market Place and directly connected to the Fayre. And we plan measures to help the traders ensure the regulars know where they will be on the day.
We will work with the BID and the Fayre organisers to find a way forward that everyone can live with and that this will be a test event to see how well everyone benefits.
We believe this Council needs to support and facilitate major events in the Town that will benefit residents, visitors and local businesses. The Market Place is a core location for such events. Working in partnership with the BID, our aim is to make such events a success, and beneficial for everyone including our charter market traders, and we recognise their concerns.
We want a thriving market, AND a vibrant town centre, AND successful events that benefit the town, our residents, our traders and local businesses, and visitors.”
