QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS COMMUNITY BEACON LIGHTING EVENT
Newbury Town Council will be hosting a Community Beacon Lighting on 2 June 2022, to celebrate The Queen’s 70th year as Monarch. There has been a long-standing tradition in the United Kingdom of celebrating royal occasions with the lighting of beacons. It is predicted that more than 2,000 beacons will be lit for the Platinum Jubilee.
The event in the pond area of Victoria Park will coincide with beacon lighting events due to take place across the country and would like to invite everyone to come along and join in the celebrations.
Music and entertainment from local groups will take place from 7pm; including Sing for Fun, VoxFresh & VoxSonix and Newbury Rock Choir until 9:30pm when commemorations and the beacon lighting will take place.
Families are encouraged to bring picnic teas and their own seating to enjoy the entertainment and the Children’s Funfair that will be in the park throughout the evening.
At 2pm on the same day, the Town Crier will also deliver the Proclamation announcing the beacon lighting in the Market Place.
Cllr Jo Day, Chair of the Council’s Civic Pride, Arts and Culture Committee, said, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has reached a remarkable anniversary in her long reign. She has been an amazing monarch who has performed her duties with such dignity and dedication. Let this event show how much we, the people of Newbury, along with the rest of the nation, appreciate the service she has given and celebrate this wonderful occasion with her.
Do come along, show your support and enjoy the celebration.”
The last time the beacon was lit in Newbury was to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in 2016.
