Victoria Park was recently recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. The Town Council received the Award for ‘The Jewel in Newbury’s Crown’ as Victoria Park is known.
The prestigious Green Flag Award is the recognised mark of a quality park or green space and demonstrates to the public that the Park boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
The Green Flag scheme is run by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ who work to improve the quality of parks and green spaces, eliminate littering and reduce waste. Each year they hold a ‘People’s Choice Award’ where members of the public can vote for their favourite Park.
Cllr Martin Colston, Leader of Newbury Town Council said, “It would be another great achievement if we can really get Victoria Park on the map and be voted as one of the nation’s favourite parks! With the new tennis courts, splash park, skatepark and great play equipment, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Victoria Park. I urge everyone to take a minute to vote for Victoria Park in the People’s Choice Awards”.
He continued, “You can find information at www.greenflagaward.org and to vote for Victoria Park, simply find it on the map and click the vote button or go directly to the link to Victoria Park http://www.greenflagaward.org/park-summary/?park=3482. Once you’ve voted, why not encourage others to get involved too. We are so proud of our beautiful Park and this is your opportunity to show your support for Victoria Park!”.
Voting opens 1 September and closes 30 September, with the top 10 winning sites being announced on 15 October.
Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award Manager said, “The People’s Choice Award is an opportunity to show how much your favourite park means to you. Make your voice heard and vote now.”
