What do Braunfels in Germany, Bagnols-sur-Cèze in France, Eeklo in Belgium, Feltre in Italy and Carcaixent in Spain have in common? The answer is, of course, that they are all twinned (or sextupletted) with Newbury.
Newbury hosted guests from its twin and linked towns including a large contingent from Carcaixent in Spain to witness and celebrate the second stage of the twinning of Newbury and Carcaixent in the Corn Exchange on Saturday 13 July. Mayor of Newbury, Elizabeth O’Keeffe and the Mayor of Carcaixent, Francesc Salom signed the twinning agreement on the stage of the Corn Exchange and the agreement was counter-signed by the Chairperson of the Newbury Twin Town Association, Zita Lang, and the President of the Carcaixent Twin Town Association, Vincent Selfa.
Cllr Martin Colston, Leader of the Council, “We are delighted to have completed this twinning loop with Carcaixent. Newbury is fortunate to have such diverse international relations and we are so lucky to have such an active Twin Town Association in Newbury to ensure the longevity of our twinning links”.
Carcaixent has been associated with Newbury for over 20 years and is already twinned with Newbury’s other twin towns. The town is close to Valencia on the Eastern coast of Spain, in the orange growing region. The twin towns meet up in their respective countries four or five times
a year. The next meeting is in Braunfels, Germany in a few weeks, for 16-25 year olds, for a week of camping and activities.
During the course of the weekend, members of the Newbury Twin Town Association not only arranged accommodation for the 60 visiting guests with host families, they also arranged a
varied programme of events including a conference and workshop about ‘Brexit the price of divorce’ at Newbury College, a Gala Dinner at the Racecourse and a Hog Roast and Barn Dance.
