Newbury Town Council is launching its ‘Newbury in Bloom 2018” campaign and after the huge success from last year’s event we are looking forward to another successful year. The campaign aims to create an attractive and sustainable environment making Newbury a greener, cleaner and more pleasant place to live together with promoting horticultural excellence, improving the appearance of our town and environment.
The campaign brings together all sectors of the community who wish to care for our environment, supporting the local economy by promoting tourism and encouraging visitors to stop and enjoy our beautiful town.
Newbury in Bloom features a competition with an additional category added for 2018, ‘Public Buildings’. We are also continuing our aim to enter the national Britain in Bloom competition in the next year or two which is judged by the Royal Horticultural Society.
The 7 categories for 2018 are:
Newbury in Bloom leaflets/entry forms will be available from the Town Hall in the Market Place or they can be downloaded from the Newbury Town Council website www.newbury.gov.uk from Thursday 29 March 2018.
Of course, encouraging better practice in our own competition can only help Newbury’s case when Newbury enters the Royal Horticultural Society’s national “Britain in Bloom” competition in the future.
As in previous years the Town Council will be putting up over 100 hanging baskets throughout the Town Centre. Victoria Park will be looking especially colourful, with our newly planted community rosebeds in flower.
Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council said, “We are so pleased with the response and quality of entrants received in the last couple of years since the campaign was re-launched and are very much looking forward to this year’s event.”
He continued, “We would like to encourage everyone to take part and make the campaign even more of a success for 2018.”
Cllr Sarah Greenall, Chair of the Newbury in Bloom Working Group said, “Last year was such an incredible success, and without our generous sponsors of the event, the campaign would not be able to take place. I would like to thank Rivar Sand & Gravel Ltd, Volker Highways, Sundog Hire and Continental Landscapes Ltd for their invaluable contributions”.Closing date for entries is 30 June 2018 and the judging for the competition will take place week commencing 9 July 2018.
