One of Newbury’s longest standing Market traders has retired from his butcher’s wagon after over 42 years trading at the Market.
Malcolm Smith began Market trading when he was just 18 years old, following in the footsteps of his father Ron, who started working at Newbury Market in 1957.
Malcolm remembers his time at the Market fondly saying, “It has been a pleasure meeting so many different people and becoming part of their lives. I have made lots of friends along the way.”
Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council said, “Malcolm’s retirement from Market trading marks the end of an era for a family that has been trading at Newbury since the 1950’s. Their longevity and commitment to our market needs to be recognised and we would like to thank Malcolm and his wife Debbie, for their hard work over the past 42 years.
He continued, “We will miss them trading at the Market, but are happy to say that they will continue to benefit from their long experience at the Market as our recently appointed Market Managers.”
