The Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Julian Swift-Hook will be unveiling a brand new play area in St George’s Avenue together with Richard Benyon MP on Saturday 4 March at 10am.
Northcroft Ward members Cllr Jeanette Clifford and Cllr Lynne Doherty were successful in securing West Berkshire Council “Members Bid” funding of £10k towards the cost and installation of the equipment earlier in the year. The total cost was £22,700 with the remainder coming from Newbury Town Council’s developer contributions (S106 monies) and playgrounds budget.
The new play area includes traditional swings, a ‘birdnest’ swing which encourages group play, a small climbing wall ‘wendy house’ for toddlers, a spinner, a springy see-saw and a rotator. There is also a multi-play climbing frame suitable for older children. The residents of St George’s Avenue requested the play area on the green, which is owned by Newbury Town Council, last year.
Cllrs Jeanette Clifford and Lynne Doherty, who helped to secure the monies, said,
“We are so pleased to have been able to provide this fabulous play area for the children who live in St George’s Avenue. There’s a great community spirit in this area and the children are very excited to have their very own play equipment at last”.
