24 Dec Christ Hospital Scholar recognised by Mayor of Newbury
Following the Town Council’s Carol Service at St Nicolas Church on Sunday 22 December, the Mayor’s guests gathered for a reception at the Town Hall.
During the reception, the traditional presentation of a gift to a Christ Hospital Scholar was made by the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Elizabeth O’Keeffe to Honey Frampton.
The Mayor explained the link of Newbury with Christ’s Hospital School, saying, “The historical connection with Newbury and Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, West Sussex is through the West family. John and Francis West lived in the latter part of the 17th and early 18th centuries. John was a wealthy merchant who married Francis Seakes, the granddaughter of Gabriel Cox who was Mayor of Newbury in 1627 and 1635”.
She continued, “The charity, established under the wills of the Wests’, provides income for the benefit of children resident in the Boroughs of Reading, Newbury, Twickenham and one girl from the City of London. Currently, 5 children from the Newbury area attend the school.”
Any young person from Newbury can make an application to the school under West’s Gifts for Children. More information is on their website: www.christs-hospital.org.uk
